The first blog…

So the blogging can be put off no longer and I am determined to at least write something before this first weekend is over. It is a daunting task and while we all seem ready and willing to be open and vulnerable in the studio, it is an entirely different matter in the permanent and scarily literal world of words. Sometimes I think that this is one of the reasons why we choose dance as our expressive medium, because it can be abstract and open to interpretation, mysterious and transient. Writings hang around forever, dammit.
So, early days in the Bank project and already two themes are emerging for me that have already come into play with both my work in the studio and in front of the computer…
To give permission to myself to be uncensored and non-judgmental
To be able to edit effectively so that I can communicate the essence without the waffle.
Both are essential in our ability to communicate clearly, concisely and creatively whether in words or movement.
Alas, like most of us, the voices in my head will always be on hand to tell me when I’m rubbish, when I decide that a particular movement looks crap, or lacks sophistication, or perhaps that my blog is boring. Yet at the same time I know that when I stop making judgments and find a truer honesty and authenticity to my work, that’s when I find something new. Thus maybe some good uncensored waffling is necessary in order to create the material from which you can then edit……
Funny how this process seems to mirror so many situations in our lives as dancers, and perhaps people, that we spend all this time learning to do more in order for us to ultimately do less.
Maybe I will edit this later……
